A forged royal inscription is discovered in the scriptorium of the Śailendra temple complex three days before a great consecration ceremony.

The priest-scribe who made is found dead. The altered text contains a false genealogy, a volcanic prophecy, a list of politically dangerous names, and a single Śaivite phrase that should not be there:

"The mountain remembers the first king."

The Śailendra court dispatches a royal nephew to suppress the scandal. The Śaivite heir whose lineage name appears in the inscription arrives to understand why it is there.

They are the only two people in the realm with the combination of skills necessary to determine what the inscription actually means and why the man who wrote it decided to die rather than finish it.

Ash begins to fall from Merapi's direction.

The consecration cannot be delayed. If it fails, the political compact holding the Śailendra confederation together unravels.
